Windows Communication Foundation is a framework for building service-oriented applications. With WCF, sharing data as asynchronous messages from one service endpoint to another is possible. An endpoint may be a client of a service requesting data from a service endpoint. A service endpoint can be a fraction of an incessantly available service hosted by IIS, or it can be a service hosted by an application. Messages can be as simple as a character or word sent as XML or as complex as a binary data stream. Here are a few example scenarios:

A service that provides updated data to others, such as a traffic report or monitoring service.
A chat repair that allows two people to converse or exchange data in real time.
A dashboard application that polls data from one or more services and displays it in a logical presentation.

Service Orientation

One of the consequences of using WS standards is that WCF allows you to build service-oriented applications. SOA, Service Oriented Architecture, uses web services to send and receive data. Services have the advantage of being loosely coupled between one application and another rather than included in the code. A loosely coupled relationship means that any client created on any platform can connect to any service as long as the essential contracts are fulfilled.

Various Message Patterns

Messages are exchanged using one of several patterns. The most common is request/response, where one end requests data from another. and the other end responds. There are different patterns, such as a one-way message, where a single lot sends an announcement without waiting for a response. A more complex way is the duplex exchange, where two ends establish a connection and send data back and forth, similar to an instant messaging program.

Services Metadata

WCF supports publishing service metadata in formats specified in industry standards, such as WSDL, XML Schema, and WS-Policy. This metadata can be used to generate and configure clients for access to WCF services automatically.

Data Contracts

Because WCF is compiled against the .NET Framework, it includes simple code methods to provide the contracts you want to apply. One of the universal contract types is the data contract. While writing service code using Visual C# or Visual Basic, the easiest way to control data is to create classes representing a data entity with properties belonging to it. When the classes that represent the data have been made, the service automatically generates the metadata that allows clients to conform to the data types that have been designed. WCF includes a complete system for working with data in this easy way.
